My husband and I own Bacchus Tours International, designing itineraries for small groups of wine enthusiasts to wine country regions all over the globe. I was recently the guest of the Australian Tourist Commission and Qantas and enjoyed a fabulous visit to South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales -- and all the wine regions therein. Met some wonderful people and tasted great wines... But I am having trouble eliciting interest in wine tours to Australia and am not sure if it's because people haven't gotten the word, or just don't care or it's too far, or....
Perhaps you all can help me out with your own personal reaction to custom tour offerings to Australian wine regions??? Thank you!

I suspect it's part distance and expense, and partly that there's no clear image in most peoples minds as to what/where Australian wine country is. They haven't done a very good job of creating a "Bordeaux" or "Napa Valley" type image for any one or more growing area to be used as a tourist attraction.

As the wines become ever more popular, that situation should begin to change.

Well, as someone who is fighting the urge to fork over big bucks to go on a wine tour of australia right at this moment, I can't imagine why anyone would turn down the chance to go. I am dying to go, but do not have the bucks to spend on that right now....had to buy a new vehicle instead. (no the trip was not as much as the vehicle....but it was about a fifth of the price)

But if I had to guess, I would agree with Curmy. The trips are usually quite long because of the distance covered, and because of the extended stay and the distance covered, they are expensive. Nothing much can be done about that I don't think.

As for the public not having a clear idea of what to expect.....I think that may be true also to some extent. May need to do some really good informative PR, then see if interest picks up.
