We went up to Grand Manan and stayed at the same cottage we used last year at Whale Cove Cottages. It was still $700 Canadian for a full week. We shared that with another couple, and put up one of our daughters up as well. The first full day, Monday, we showed them around the island. Tuesday was a museum day, so there we went, as well as some serious retailing. We ended up with yet another watercolor by well known local artist Thisbe Schenk. On Wednesday we took a day trip to adjacent Whitehead Island on a small ferry paid for by the people of Canada. On Thursday we went kayaking on a surface as smooth as you know what. Saw grey and harbor seals, many different sea birds, and managed not to get run over by the ferry to the mainland, or a large variety of working craft. On Friday we went whale watching on a sixty eight foot ketch. Saw seals, boids, and two humpback whales. On Saturday we hiked along the tops of the cliffs for about four miles. On Sunday we came back here and the ladies took us out for Father’s Day dinner. There is little to do up there at night, so we played cards (Hand and Foot) and drank wine every night after dinner.

Wines consumed:

1. 2000 Enzo Mecella, Rosso Piceno, Colle Mavano ($7.99 U.S.) with Sloppy Joes. This wine goes with anything!

2. 1999 Chateau d’Epire Savennieres ($9.99 U.S.). Quaffed with cards. This one is not fading and, in fact, is improving with age.

3. 2002 Salmon Run, New York State, Chardonnay ($9.95 U.S.) with sautéed chicken breasts. Lovely and oak free. Apples and pears, and much more.

4. 2000 Inniskillon, Niagara Peninsula, Chardonnay ($11.50 Canadian). Quaffed with cards. Oak bomb.

5. NV EMU 999, Australian Tawny Port ($9.41 Canadian). Fantastic value. We managed to destroy three bottles of it during the week. Sorry Georgie. Don’t know if it is available in the U.S. We did leave a couple of bottles on the shelf.

6. 2000 Antinori, Casasole, Orvieto Classico ($25 Canadian-Restaurant). Matched with a fantstic seafood casserole at our host’s upscale restaurant. Matched surprisingly nicely. They were reworking their wine list for the season, and only had a few wines available. It sold for $13.50 Canadian in the island package store.

7. 2002 Chateau de LaGuimoniere, Rose’ d’Anjou ($11 U.S.). Quaffed with cards. Fantastic rose’. Look for it. Clear deep rose color, fruity nose and upfront, with crisp acidity across the palate.

8. 2002 Entre-Deux-Mers ($13.29 Canadian). Made from Sauvignon Blanc (60%), Semillon (30%), and Muscadelle (!0%). We looked carefully for something to go with wonderful steamed mussels, and this one filled the bill in spades.

9. Philip Staley. Coat of the Roan, First Foal ($12 U.S.). Matched perfectly with well seasoned grilled boneless sirloins.

10. 2001 Joseph Drouhin, LaForet, Pinot Noir ($8.52 U.S.). Quaffed with cards; lovely.

11. NV Parteger White, 1 liter carafe, ($14 Canadian). Matched with various seafood dishes in waterfront fish platz. OK.

12. 2002 Castelvero, Piemonte, Cortese ($7 U.S.). Quaffed with cards. Still love this wine. One of the few that is very acidic that still goes well without food.

13. NV Hermit Canadian Port, 1 liter bottle, ($9 Canadian). Quaffed before dinner. Friend thought he was buying Sherry! Still a fairly decent Ruby Port.

14. 2003 Two Oceans, Sauvignon Blanc, South Africa, Western Cape ($11 Canadian). Outstanding with boiled lobsters. Killed two bottles. Again, don’t know if available in the U.S. Well worth looking for.

15. 2000 Cesari, Mara, Vino di Ripasso ($9.99 U.S.). Quaffed on safely arriving back here. This is a fantastic quaffer.

16. 2001 Excelsior, Cabernet Sauvignon, South Africa ($20 U.S.-Restaurant). Really fine value cab. Gives you heaps of cassis and chocolate. Matched splendidly with grilled loin steaks covered with a pile of stuff. This baby retails for around $9 and should be sought out.
