Wandering around in Victoria, BC, the capital of British Columbia, which is located about a 17 minutes flight off the mainland. Yup…this is one of those flights where before you get to cruising altitude, the plan is already preparing to land.

I had been in Vancouver for some time before going to Victoria and had been trying to get to the Okanagan wine area, especially to see wineries like Osooyoo Larose and Mk’ Inkmip (sp?) but no luck. No chance whatsoever. In fact, many nights of pizza in the office and a few hours of sleep …. Oh well..maybe one day…..maybe next week!

So walking around Victoria, the last thing I expected to see was the Mission Hill company store. I jumped in. They had a nice sale on Riedel glasses (o’s were selling for $12 for two and if they were not so fragile (err..I travel rough), I would have bought some.

So tasted five items:

Mission Hill, 2005 Reserve Chardonnay. Super pineapple nose and hint of wood. Much the same on palate, good length and nice acidity.

Mission Hill Five Vineyards, 2005 Pinot Noir Okanagan Valley, Medium – body with decent elegant nose, red fruits and a hint of spice. Simple, tight, still tannic so needs some bottle time.

2005 Fork in the Road, a new product for Mission Hill, looks to be more for the younger crowd or to compete against the blasted churches of the world. Priced about the same too. A mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz. Nose of ripe dark fruits, reserved, dark wine. On palate, the same, dry, Shiraz component felt colder climate and Cabernet Sauvignon was dominate though not the major percentage contributor.

Mission Hill, 2004 Merlot Reserve, a bit green, rougher tannins, sweeter sensation, nose had some perfumed wood components.

Mission Hill 2004, Vidal Reserve Ice Wine. Colour was like an older sauternes, deep golden, nose of lychee, apricot and a hint of nuttiness. Super thick, super syrupy wine. Smooth though and enough acidity to keep things fresh.

Nice notes. Headed for NB next week and will seek some of these out in the Provencial Store.

I really like their Riesling Icewine, and it only costs a little more than the Vidal...

Ik, have a great time in NB!

VH, I agree with you that their rieslings are better and the increate is something like $10 a bottle.
