Just thought I'd let you guys in on one of my favorites. I could have very well posted this under "best buys" as well. Caves Velhas makes a wonderful Dao Red for about $6.99 a bottle, that makes a great every-day drinker if you can find enough of it. If you really want to splurge, you can spend an extra 2 to 3 dollars and get the Reserva. The Reserva's I've had are noticibly more concentrated, have aged extremely well (1985) and appear to currently be at peak. A very impressive wine for the money!

Even being a novice, I had already tried the Dao reds and appreciated a lot ( 1996 Calamares ). Any word on Douro region Portugueses ?

I've lately tried a number of Portuguese wines--Dao, Douro and beyond; have been impressed mainly both with quality and price.

We are down in Bristol, RI and visited our favorite wine shop in Fall River. There was the Caves Velhas Dao for $5.25 per bottle. Our friend is having a birthday party with Mexican food tomorrow night, so we bought her an ample supply of the Dao to go with it.

Real Compania Velha has some fantastic Douro wines. The Quinta do Cidro Roriz comes to mind right away. About $16. JP Vinhos Herdade de Santa Marta Alentejo at around $10 a bottle is another favorite Portuguese wine of mine. It's a Terras da Sado.

The Dao was a huge hit at our friend's 60th Birthday party with upscale Mexican food, right on Mount Hope Bay in RI. Received kudos from host and fellow guests alike. Now that's getting a lot of pop out of a $5.25 wine. If EVER in Fall River, MA a stop at Tanza Southway Liquors is a must. Many thanks for the suggestion WC.

Innkeeper- Always glad to share my favorites. At $5.25 a bottle, I take it you probably found the blue label Velhas, their every day drinker. Try to find the Reserva (yellowish /brown label) if you can. I still have more 85's & 94's in my cellar. Don't know off hand what other vintages were great, but for only a couple dollars more for the Reserva, how can you go wrong?
