I've never had this varietal before. First impression is that this is very aromatic on the first pull of the cork.

VERY deep purple and opaque, very much like a syrah in color, but much brighter if that makes sense.

On the nose, a bit overoaked, smokey for me but not too far away was decent amounts of red fruit like plums, forest and a lot of violet....like my assistant's window....that that is another story.. Despite the wine's depth and density of flavors, it was still rather fresh.

The wine felt warm, round, and had a long persistence. Good amounts of acid and tons of tannins. Not sure if it is typical but it would make me look for other lagreins to try, abet one with a bit less wood.

Your description of it is close to typical for the variety--sans the wood. What was the price?

Oops...It was $16.99 at K&L in SF.
