This event was February 20th, my first event of the 2003 Triangle Wine Experience benefitting Frankie Lemmon School for children with special needs. The restaurant, Nana's in Durham, did a superb job with the food. I didn't bring the menu with me but it included salad, an appetizer, duck, venison and fruit crepe with apricot sauce-yum! Dick and Nancy Ponzi were there to answer questions about the wines. We first had a Pinot Blanc--very nice and a good alternative to Chardonnay. This is the first year they have marketed Pinot Blancs from this clone I believe. The second course was accompanied with a Pinot Gris--not my favorite varietal but well made. One lady at my table preferred the Pinot Gris to the Pinot Blanc. With the duck we got our first taste of the Pinot Noir--I believe it was 2001. I liked it very much. Cherries were present but the aroma held a more profound note--maybe the softest suggestion of forest after rain. With the venison we received a pour of the 1999 Pinot Noir Reserve. It seemed to be a heavier-bodied wine than the younger pinot noir and some at my table liked it better--I liked the regular pinot noir better. In this case I would not spend the extra to get the reserve p.n. With the crepes we had a "non-Ponzi" wine, an Italian dessert wine, a moscato d'asti that was quite enjoyable with the crepes.
One lady at my table has a son attending Frankie Lemmon School, so we got to hear firsthand about the benefits the children derive. In one of those nice coincidences, two couples at my table were also at the wine dinner at Sullivan's with me last year although we hadn't coordinated on attending the same dinner this year.

I have always enjoyed their Pinot Gris -- but I am an OR Gris fan.
