Nope, it fact I bend over backwards trying to like Italians..... it just is not for me. I accept it, I moved on -- far too many other wines that I like to worry about one region. No harm, no foul.

Hedges Cab-Merlot blend is still pretty affordable. But I'll agree that Hedges prices have gone ka-boom.

Got a bunch of Hedges reds at bargain prices today. The 3 Vinyards blend...usually $25, was only $16, and the '98 Red Mountain was only $35. I said I was going to make some room in the cellar, glad I did.

You are so right foodie!
Went through my recent receipts and found that I am quite off-center QVP when it come to NW Pac wines, especially the reds. But after a bit of nosing around the everyday bins in the basement, retrieved a Columbia Crest Grand Estates Cab, Hogue Cab/Merlot, Powers Merlot, and an Eaton Hill Cab Franc that have enjoyed, all at or around the magic number. So does not make my other purchases look that bad, or does it?

Good buy Z-Man. The 98 RM is a really nice bottle. Still too young for me to test it. Maybe next year. WW

I have to confess that I'm still a novice with Italian and Australian wines. I did go to one special Italian tasting last fall and liked about half the wines (some big wines were too young and tannic to be fully appreciated). One type that does stand out for me is the Amarone della Valpolicella. While traveling in Italy I usually asked for a chianti or valpolicella because I liked the regular valpolicella also. And sometimes I had the lambrusco. Bucko likes pinot grigio--that's one I don't particularly like.
If I get to NYC I will visit Is-Wine and bring back with me the salice salentino I keep hearing about and some Collio Merlot if it is available.
