It's my birthday today, and I want to have a wine that pairs well, and is also really, really enjoyable (splurge night). My lovely wife is making Pasticcio. I call it Greek Lasagne, but it's got Rigatoni pasta with ground beef and lamb, tomatoes, with oregano, nutmeg, cinnamon, little garlic, then baked with a with a custard cap that's got Feta and Parmessan cheese in it. It's not spicy at all, but very full flavored.

From my basement I was thinking of either:
2001 E Guigal Chateauneuf-du-pape
2001 Le Cole 41 Seven Hills Vinyard Estate Syrah - Walla Walla

But I'd love some other suggestions as well.

Thanks!

I wouldn't attempt to suggest a wine, but I will wish you a very happy birthday! Sounds like you have a lovely evening planned.

HHH, Welcome to the Board. That 2001 Guigal is a wonderful wine, but many years away from being ready to open. Save it for your birthday in 2015. The Seven Hills Syrah ia also a bit of a baby and should probably rest a few more years. Your on the right track though. A Syrah would go very well with that dish. Also, Rioja or a Washington Cab would work, too, though not any of the big monsters.

Georgie, thanks for the wish! KC, allight...I'll hold Guigal and the Syrah. But if you think a Wash Cab would do, I'm not sure I have any ready to pop, maybe a blend? I've got a 2001 Betz Clos de Betz that might good or maybe a 2001 Leonetti Merlot?

- Kcwhippet - 01-28-2005

I think I'd be inclined to go with the Betz.

Agree with KC. Have been told that the Leonetti wines are huge, including the Merlot. Would hang onto it a couple of more years too.

I'd pull a Barbera d'Alba to pair with that dish. Lots available under $20.

I ended up stopping at my favorite Wine Shop McCarthy and Schiering and bought a McCrea Syrah from Ciel du Cheval vineyard on Red Mounting in Washingtom. Fantastic wine!

You'll find posting on this beauty under the appropriate thread. Agree on it's quality. WW
