I read something in my local paper today about how the Finger Lakes grape harvests for reds (and some Long Island ones too) suffered this year from too much rain and cold, although the whites (my favorite, hence my name) generally came through pretty well. The article predicted that the red wines this year from this region will be lighter than usual in color and body.

I don't know where you are upstate, but you probably experienced the weather yourself, which was rainy and cool for the most part (and at crucial times). And red grapes really need sun and extended periods of warmth to achieve good ripeness at more northerly/cool climate latitudes, e.g. in the Finger Lakes. Whites like Riesling and Gewurztraminer generally do better, more consistently there.

So, no surprises here. The "Speculator" has indicated a tough year for the region. Our own Foodie might have more specific info on how the vintage fared, but he will tell you that in the FL, a good red wine vintage happens only about once every four years or so.

Cheers,

You know you are from Upstate NY, when the driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled with snow. And you know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still
winter, construction.
