Over Thanksgiving, Anne and I picked up several wines from TN while we were up there. I've had stuff from GA, VA, NC, and even AL (shuddering at the memory), so we wanted to try some local stuff from that neck of the woods. I'll be popping them over the coming few weeks, and I'll keep the TNs in this thread. We popped the first last night to pair with a veg lasagne.

2001 Chateau Ross Wedding Harvest Sangiovese

Chateau Ross is located north of Nashville in Springfield, TN, and just east of the state's best winery (Beachaven Vineyards in Clarksville, where they supposedly make a pretty good sparkler). This wine wasn't good. The nose was variously described through the evening as "medicine cabinet," "cedar chest," and "flea powder," with Anne providing the most horrifying assessment -- "strawberry urine." The color was firetruck red. Once you get past the awful nose, the wine was drinkable. Somewhat thin and dilute, but it had decent acidity to stand up to the tomato sauce in the lasagne. Short finish that showed some heat. I'm hoping that the next ones are better. Paid $15. Alc. 12.5%.

flea powder and strawberry urine--you guys have reached new heights in descriptions. Although, I didn't know strawberries can pee--ba, da, bing...

Reminds me of a Groucho joke: as the manager of a hotel in one of his movies, Groucho takes a call from someone in a room who wants ice water. Groucho retorts, "I'll send up an onion. That'll make your ice water."

New "depths" in descriptions, Foodie.

I had a nice Riesling from Orr Mountain Winery 20 years ago. It's out of Madisonville in E. Tennessee. From a TN website:

"Orr Mountain Winery: Contact Harry Orr, 355 Pumpkin Hollow Road, Madisonville, TN 37354. (423) 442-5340.

Hours: Wednesday - Saturday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM; Sunday 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. During July & August, Mon.-Sat. 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Sunday 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Directions: From I-75, at Exit 60, take Hwy. 68 South and go one mile beyond "The Lost Sea" to blue directional sign and turn right on County Rd. 121. Go 1/3 mile, turn right up private driveway and turn right at winery sign. Road leads to picnic area with a lovely view of the mountains on the right and the winery is on the left.

Wines: Chardonnay; a delicate rose, Tellico Rose; semi-sweet blush; sweet white; gold medal winning Bald River Red."

There's not even a Riesling listed now among their products.

Had my 2nd and 3rd wines from the same producer. A few days ago, we opened the Chambourcin. It's called "Passion," and ran about $18. It was from the '00 vintage. Anyway, it showed the same nose as the other wine, and Anne finally decided that it wasn't flea powder or stawberry urine after all -- she thinks it seemed "pesticidal." Do wineries use pesticides that will impact nose and/or flavor? Anyway, Anne instructed me to pour it down the drain. "I don't have to drink this," she said. 13% alc. Didn't get a good look at the color or get any impression from my brief taste -- the nose was just too bad.

A few nights later, I had enough nerve built up to try another. It's the '02 "Big Bitch Red" blend from them. No notes on the varietals in the blend. Good purple color in the glass, and the nose was plum and peppery. Not a bad quaffer, with flavors that went more to the red fruits than I would have guessed from the color/nose. Finally a decent one from these guys, though a bit vegetal on the finish. Alc. 12% It goes for about $15.

Still have a Nebbiolo blend to try. Gotta work up some courage first, however.

Good Gracious Dan why would you pay 15 for non-descript juice when you can buy so many good bottles of Calif blends for less? I've put my regional pride aside and can asuure you there are NO Arizona wines in my cellar. WW

More curiosity than regional pride. I like to experiment, and I had found some nice stuff from GA and VA wineries in the past, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Plus, when Anne and I finally decide to drop out of the rat race in Atlanta, we'll probably end up with some land there, so I was also curious to see what success (if any) was being had with varietals in case I get the bug to plant a few vines to keep me busy

I heard Callaghan made some nice wines in Arizona, though I'm sure you've tried them.

So, you're saying it's not about to challenge the Classified Growths?
