Being a fan of Loire wines, I looked forward to trying a gift bottle of Vouvray. I have no track record with this producer, the wine may be in some "phase," or it may just not be my cup of tea.

A stinky Chenin nose with overripe fruit aromas leap from the glass. The immediate impression on the palate is one of cotton candy in this off-dry wine. This is followed
with a sense of very ripe quince fruit, crisp acids, and finishes with a somewhat bitter, chemical/garlic taste that had the wife crinkling up her nose. Admittedly, it improved with a couple of hours of air time, showing less of the adverse finish, but this one doesn't do it for me. I understand that this wine got some pretty good press -- just shows that it pays to try before you buy.

The wine? 1997 Pinon Vouvray Cuvee Tradition.
