I can't remember what book it was. Probably some essays by a russian novelist, since that was most of the theoretical material I read during my undergrad (I was a Russian Lit minor).

Anyway, one idea that stuck out to me in my reading is that as people get older and really get to deep-seated ideas about things politcal or aesthetic, they tend to believe that these ideas were come to through arduous intellectual digging and through reflection on life's experiences.

I think probably we all believe that to an extent. I certainly do.

However, the author says this is a fallacy. In fact, s/he argues, our deeply-held ideals are nothing more than preference: There's a certain way in which we prefer to see the world, and our ideas are merely resultant from our preferences, or even whims. That our ideas come from anything deeper is merely an illusion.

While I don't exactly buy into this theory 100%, I think the point is true to an extent, and this certainly applies at times to wine.

I was about to write a really good TN for Champalou's 2006 La Cuvee des Fondraux Vouvray...

It's not quite a demi-sec, but it's getting up there in terms of sugar. Some nuts, some honey, apples, and just a tiny bit of that lanolin thing all over gracious minerality... But here's the thing... It's not really all that good. It could use more acidity; in fact it's a bit flabby. The flavors are pleasant, but not exactly super-vibrant. I got it in a discount bin for $13, and would buy a case at that price if I could, but at the regular $18+, there are much better deals out there...

But here's the thing: I REALLY LIKE this wine! I would take this any day over a good qba or low-tier Kabinett, even a really good one, even a much "better" wine.

But that's just preference.

(just an aside, if you see this wine from 2002, 2005, or (it looks like) 2008, it will be worth every penny, even if you ain't no dang "vouvray-head". '06 was a poor vintage, and this wine would really shine in a better one)
