I haven't shared any third grade stories with you in awhile. This happened the other day and I certainly wished I'd have had another adult in the room to enjoy it with.
After lunch recess, I always have the kids read for 15 minutes to calm them down before starting math class. Lukas comes to my desk and reports that Kevin has a VERY bad word in his book. I got Kevin up to the desk. The word was "gay." OK, it happens every year. I always point out that "gay" is a perfectly fine word and give them the true meaning. Then I add that I know people use that word to make fun of ohers or to hurt feelings and THEN it's a bad word. Next comes up Nick, who's reading a dog book from the school library. "This says BITCHES," Nick reports. So I explained that when speaking of a female dogs, that word is perfectly correct. Next comes up Melissa, who is reading a book of poetry by a black poet that I had out for Black History month. She points out the "N" word in her book. More explaining by teacher....Cora pipes up, "What about HELL?" Again I explained that the word, when used as a curse is a bad word. But I added that I hear about hell in church, so I don't think it's always a bad word. By this time I was starting to laugh. So I said, "While we're at it, how about the word ASS?" I'd have loved to have heard the discussion around the dinner table that night! You just can't make this stuff up!

Missed seeing this earlier, Georgie. I love the one about the dog book.
