Today was one of those days that make me remember why I love kids. We got hit with what's been termed a "mini nor'easter" that has brought us a fair amount of snow. I don't have to tell you what snow does to 8 year-olds. It was hard to keep focused on lessons. Finally around 1:45 I bagged the social studies lesson I had planned, pulled the blinds all the way to the top of the windows, passed out blue paper and white chalk and said, "Draw!" They were delighted, of course. Spontaneous singing of "Jingle Bells" ensued. In the midst of it all I overheard someone remark that Otto, a little boy from Cuba, had never experienced snow. I'd forgotten that he'd moved here over the summer. I said, "Otto! Get your coat on! Go outside!" The rest of the class watched from the window as Otto went running out the door, promptly slipped and fell on his butt, then caught snowflakes on his tongue, threw his first snowball and twirled around in delight. It was definitely a Kodak moment. It's really refreshing to see things through a child's eyes.

What, kids in school and snow on the ground?
Wednesday it was about 31 deg. F and a little sprinkle of rain and the schools were delayed for 2 hours here.
If it would have snowed they would have been out all week.

When I was in tech school in Minneapolis, my best friend was from the Cayman Islands and had also never seen snow. All summer the first year he keeps asking us "If snow is ice and ice is hard and this is falling out of the sky, doesn't it hurt if you are outside when it is snowing?". We told him it was like little feathers that melted and not to worry.
So, about late October, he is at work in a lab and a serious HAIL storm starts up and he looks out the window and thinks "finally, my first snow" and runs outside into it and manages to get a concussion when a golf ball sized hailstorm nails him in the head right between the eyes.
For a month or so until it actually snowed for real he would not talk to any of us and ws convinced we had lied to him.

When I worked in an emergency hospital, we had a guy from India interning with us. We were working the overnight shift, and one night it started snowing like crazy. He had never seen it before. It was so neat to see the innocent enjoyment of an adult seeing snow for the first time. Moments like that make you see things more clearly and appreciate them more, I think.

Meanwhile, in the Southern Hemisphere, it's 24 degrees Celcius (75F) and humid as all get out. The only ice I'm seeing is floating in my rum and cokes. [img]http://38.118.142.245/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]
In fact, chalk me up for the "Never seen it snow" club. It just looks cold and damp to me.

Aw c'mon. There's nothing more beautiful than freshly fallen snow. Try taking a nighttime walk after a snowfall when the snow sparkles like diamonds and the only sound is the crunch of your boots. Every bare tree branch outlined in white; the evergreens dressed in lace...clean, crisp fresh air...you guys are really missing something.
