Ray Brown, one of the pre-eminent bass players ( The big hummer that's almost 6' tall) who ever lived has died. Was in the original Oscar Peterson trio and played with Dizzy Gillespie and most of the other great jazz musicians, when musicians actually played and knew their instruments. A great loss. WW

He will be sorely missed BUT, I understand Ray played a show then a round of golf then went to sleep and didn't wake up.....not a bad last day.

Appeared on over 2000 recordings, one of the 'most recorded' musicians in history.

And here's hoping my last day is as pleasant.

I definitely need to spend more time in here. Didn't know we have jazz buffs too. WF

I had a quintet in college that played all of the major venues in New York every summer. Voted by Down Beat as Best college 5 in the country. Was lucky enough to have grown up when musicians mastered their instruments, knew more than 3 chords and one key and could improvise for over an hour on "Come to Jesus in "C". VB

How many people now even know what a quintet is?

5 of us. WW

That would be just enough.
