Anne and I rented a casita in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Everyone have a wonderful 4th of July weekend, and I'll post on the trip when I return. Take care, all!

San Miguel de Allende is a colonial silver mining town in the mountains of central Mexico. It's about 4 1/2 hours northwest of Mexico City near the city of, and in the state of, Guanajuato. The town dates from 1542, and the architecture is staggeringly beautiful. There is a sizeable ex-pat and foreigner influence, and the town is known for it's great restaurants, shopping, and scenic beauty. There's also a great deal of history, as the independence movement began there.

At any rate, we stayed in a private casita in a small neighborhood outside of the Centro. We walked the short distance in each morning for breakfast, walked the town, shopped, indulged in afternoon siestas back at the casita, then walked back in to spend the evenings shopping, foraging for food, etc. Very restful and relaxing week. We had some tremendous meals, but the wines weren't in great quantity or selection. We did have some decent Spanish stuff that I'll post on shortly, and we tried some Mexican producers, as well -- mostly Baha stuff. All in all, a fantastic trip.

The only bad thing was Mexico City's airport. If Mexico City is hell, and it's often described as such even by Mexicans, the epicenter is certainly Benito Juarez International Airport. We spent about 8 hours there, so believe us.

If anyone is interested, here's a link to a few photos of San Miguel:

Sounds like a lovely trip! As soon as I get access to a real computer, I'll look at those pictures. By the way, how did you come across the casita?

I came across the casita while searching rentals on-line. Here's the link to the casita we stayed in:
