I was not too sure if the wine board was an appropriate place to bring up my question, BUT...since you guys always seem to be very helpful, here it goes!

I am throwing a suprise (shhhhhh...) birthday party for my husband's big 3-0! The thing is, he is a police officer...so I will need to invite all of the guys that he works with, (maybe a total of 20 or so) and they will never fit into my tiny little house!

Any suggestions for a *creative, original, exciting* celebration?! I am just stuck!

Of course we (or they) could just go do the restaurant thing, but I was looking for something a little more FUN and different! Since most of you are male here...what would sound good to you? I am willing to set up plans and coordinate everything, and just let the 'boys' have at it! (I don't even need to be there! LOL)

ANY ideas or suggestions would really be appreciated!

THANKS SO MUCH!!!

Actually the restaurant thing is not such a bad idea. Here is one way of doing it:

Take him out to dinner for his birthday. Make sure the place has a party room that is separate from the main dining area.

Have all the surprise party guests already staged in the private room.

You and your husband take a seat in the dining room. Pre-arrange with the waiter or owner or whatever, to have a staff member come to your table and say that so-and-so at another table would really appreciate your visiting with them for a minute or two.

Take him back to the private room: SURPRISE!

Worked for my Father's 75th Surprise Birthday party. Might work for your husband's 30th.

In these parts, we simply fire up the pit, ice down a few cases of beer in washtubs (or your pickup bed), put a bit of Waylon & Willie on the box, kick back and enjoy. Throw whatever's available into the pit - brisket, burgers, sausage, ribs, chickens, whole hog - they won't care. It's a good way to clean out your freezer to make room for the next side of beef. Have some sides of beans, potatoe salad, and cole slaw, with pecan pie and homemade ice cream for dessert. He'll think he's died and gone to heaven.

If I know Cops like I know Cops I'd do the backyard thing, with beer and beef on the BBQ, check the guns at the door and party down.....been doing it for 30 years.

And invite some of your girlfriends, cuz we all know how much the Men in Blue like to talk to the ladies!

Nothing but a myth....just like the doughnut thing.

How about the fact that the Police Retirement Fund is the largest single investor in Krispy Kreme? WW

Just cause our eyes are glazed don't mean we've been eating doughnuts.

What great ideas! I really do like the idea of the BBQ, but my back yard is a disater!

Basically it is a mud pit! We have a new 'sporting' dog (a German Shorthaired Pointer) who loves to run around so much that the grass is unable to grow under her feet. That along with the fact that it has rained here for the last week and a half SOLID, will probably deter me from having it here at my home. Hmmmm....I am thinking that a friend of his may offer if I tell him what my situation is!

The BBQ would probably be exactly what he wants! Ok then......who can send me some GOOD BBQ recipies?! This should be fun....and CCK, inviting some girlfriends is probably a good idea, we know how "they" can be, eh?!

P.S. Yes Drew...we DO know the truth about y'all!

For any BBQ recipes, we need to know what you'd like to cook and how you'd like to cook it. What are your options? What kind of equipment do you have?

To reclaim your backyard, shoot the dog.

......and throw him on the pit. I "gauruntee" half way through the party most won't know, or care, what their eatin'. Hmmmmm, now what to pair with pit hound? Zin or Syrah?

Hmmmmmm, good questions hotwine. I am not so sure about BBQing because I usually cook indoors! (and my schooling didn't teach otherwise! HE HE)

Anyway, I guess I will try anything. Maybe chicken wings and ribs? I don't think I have a good recipie for BBQ, besides, YOU are the one in Texas, eh? LOL

As far as equipment, we have one of those half barrel smoker/grill thingies.

ANY suggestions would be appreciated, really!

P.S. Good idea Drew!!! Hmmmmm, she is a very lean dog, so not sure as to what pairing would be good?!

- hotwine - 05-22-2001

Think I'd stick with burgers and beer.

BTW, the best pairing for chien a flambe' is Chateau Tabasco, and lots of it.
