I am preparing a romantic lasagna lunch with a red tomato sauce and italian sausage. Which wine would go best? I would prefer something not too overwhelming.

Not knowing what is available in your neck of the woods, I recommend you try to find a red wine wine called Montepulciano d"Abruzzi. Should be available.
Also, the sausage should be layered inside the lasagna, alternating with the cheese.
