- Thomas - 11-15-2006

Nah, you are on the right board ww, just the wrong thread. You want the thread about all those marvelous white wines

Ain't that like Hotsie!? He pokes the skunk and then runs away, leaving us to deal with it. I think he is a pinko agitator. Git a rope!

- Glass_A_Day - 11-15-2006

What have I done Foodie? Voted republican. You clearly don’t' have an answer to anything I have posted. About my specific experiences or otherwise. Hiding behind something about generalization? And I thought you could discuss this all night. LOL. You haven't discussed anything. You haven't responded to any of the instances I wrote about. All you have done is get defensive about poverty because you experienced it. I never attacked poverty, just abuse and you can't seem to get your mind around that concept. I thought a writer would be able to express himself better.

- Thomas - 11-15-2006

GAD. When I asked about the fishing I was not inviting you to bait me.

- Glass_A_Day - 11-15-2006

Alright, I give. You don't want to discuss, that's fine. I enjoy lively convo, but if you're out, you're out. I truly would like to give you a tour of my city though. Your poverty is not what I see every day and that may be why we don't seem to get each other. Maybe someday an offline will occure where we can all chat about such things in person. I bet we would get more out of that.

Want me to start talking about PROPERTY TAXES, and how they're used to pay for INDIGENT (illegal) health care, education, housing, not to mention fire & police protection? Maybe not.

- Bucko - 11-16-2006

No, Hotsie, we have too much of that in WA -- lots of illegals work the vineyards here, as well as construction.

I have a lot of mixed emotions about the illegals. I don't have all of the answers for sure, but I would like to see work visas in some form. At least we could get some taxes that way. As it is now, there are a lot of under-the-table payoffs, with the coyotes and disreputable business owners reaping the profits.

- Innkeeper - 11-16-2006

Speaking of TAXES, the Onion Leader had three different stories yesterday about communities in NH considering a "view tax."

- winoweenie - 11-16-2006

As we don't have a problem with illegals here in Az I refuse to enter into the conversation. I'm for a work visa 104%. We need to get a handle on this problem and I doubt that the incoming group has any idea how to resolve it. WW

After hearing about this debate from my husband over breakfast this morning, I had to log in and give my two cents. I am new to GADS city but see the abuse he is referring to every day. I saw the tenants in his families rental property live off the system while driving a newer car than myself. When I heard that one actually had a boat and a truck to pull it while living off SSI disability I was truly disgusted. And to Foodie, if you think I am just an observer, let me tell you what I know of poverty. When I was 6 my parents moved my family of 5 to upstate New York. They had no money as their previous house burnt to the ground right after purchase and days before insurance was to kick in. For the first six months we lived in a tent on the land they bought with the last of their money. While in the tent my father made enough money to buy materials to build the garage. Upon it's completion we lived in this garage while dad was building the house. It took over two years as work was slow. Now you have to remember that there was no electricity, running water, or toilet. We got our water from a stream, ran generator, heated with wood, and had an outhouse. Yes, in the 1980's I was using an outhouse. I could go on, but i think everyone can understand the level of poverty I grew up in. That said, I've gone to three colleges all paid for by ME the last of which being an Ivy League school, Smith College. My husbands family has done things pretty much the same so I can see why he gets fired up by those abusing the system; especially when the number of abusers exceed the number of needy users. (At least in our area of the state.) I also see this in the hospital I work in with those abusing Masshealth to pay for emergency room visits because they had a big sneeze. It maddening. I also agree with my husband pertaining to getting these abusers to work and cutting down the jobs open to illegals. The two issues are absolutly related and they have nothing to do with poverty.

Having her grow up like that sure put a cap on my wine budget. I can remember when we were first dating hearing, "You want to pay how much for that bottle?!"

- winoweenie - 11-16-2006

It sure eases up when you get the lil' darlings sipping the juice with you done it GAD! My CB doesn't even blink when she sees some of the invvoices now. WW
