Reminds me of our first family vacation in 1986. My wifes 11 and 6 year old daughters, my pregnate wife, mother-in-law and my wifes 6 year old nephew. Going to Myrtle Beach.
And I swear this part is true.
We were ALL in a Plymouth Horizon Hatchback. It was my first and last trip with my mother-in-law.

Don't get me wrong WW, I do love my mother in law. We have lived in the same town with her for the last 16 years.
The first 12 we were 2 blocks away. And it wasen't "Everybody Loves Tank".

Home sweet home! The dogs were great in the car (better living through pharmaceuticals)and very good at my brother's. We did have a couple of exciting games of "catch the dog" when my sister's pup got loose and ran all over kingdom come, just having the time of his life. Once he got loose at 10:30 pm and I was sure he was headed for the top of Jockey's Ridge (a mountain-sized sand dune) which is located right behind my brother's house! But all-in-all it was a fun visit. Drank some unremarkable pinot grigio (I don't remember the maker) and some really remarkable margaritas! Home-made she crab soup, scallops, shrimp, soft shell crabs and fantastic crab cakes over the course of the weekend. I am now ready for some red meat!

Glad to here your weekend went well Georgie.
Isn't Jocky Ridge the sand dune where they hangglide off of.
And on Thanksgiving day about 4 years ago we were fishing off of Nags Head Peir, and caught alot of crokers. Fun to catch but not too good to eat.
Did you make it there in 9 hours. It took us 7 hours to get there and 12 hours to get home. Everyone wanted to stop at every little shop expecialy the Christmas Shops, on the way home.

Welcome home, Georgie. Now all you have to do is gather up all your clothes and get them to the dry cleaners with special instructions to remove all dog hair...and slobber...

Yes, Jockey's Ridge is the big dune from which people hang glide. Nag's Head pier is still there, but because of heavy damage sustained during Isabel, no one is allowed out on it. I exercised control and stayed away from the Christmas Shop this trip! And Hotsie, you must have clairvoyance of the nose or something. Can you smell my clothes from Texas? I wasn't going to say anything, but now that hotsie let the cat, er, dog out of the bag: phew...and what's with soft shell crabs out of season?

Ha! The crabs had been frozen. I'd never eaten one before and can't say I loved it.. My sister, who adores them, said that these were ok, but not like when they're fresh. Everything else was great.

They ARE great fresh. My sister had her first softshell crab when we were together in Baltimore one time. Or was it when we went to the Cezanne exhibit in Philadelphia? Seems like it was in Fells Point, Baltimore but I can't remember my sister and me being in Baltimore together. The memory gets tricky when you live enough decades (at least mine does)

As far as I am concerned, soft shells can be eaten only when fresh, preferably alive until preparation time. Frozen ones feel like mush and taste like mud--IM(always)HO.
