When I first moved into my house a couple of years ago, I pretty much gutted the place, move walls, gutted the kitchen, washrooms, etc and installed all new heating, A/C, windows, etc,... everything except......the old oak floors that came with this old colonial.... The floors were in decent to fair shape back then but over these last two years, they have deteriorated significantly......so this year I finally decided to refinish them....WHAT A MESS...there is dust everywhere.,.. I had to move all my furniture into two bedrooms and the kitchen (which will be done next week)...in fact, I am living .............in my cellar......I guess that's not such a bad thing... Did you do the refinishing yourself? We're going to get our floors done soon and we're going to go with a flooring company that uses machines that collect the dust alleviating that problem.

Being in the trades I knew to do the floors first when we bought this house. Everyone said I was crazy and that they should be done last so no one would be working over the newly finished floors. The amount of dust it creates is amazing though. When I go to peoples homes to paint they often ask if they should have the floors done first or second. I always tell them first unless they want to spend days cleaning their new paint job. Nasty business.

Surely you put sheets over all the doorways secured with lots of duct tape!

Yup...I won't make the same mistakes again. I actually brought in contractors who had the filter system and we did the entire house save for areas without hardwood (the kitchen and washrooms and the two bedrooms that are currently holding all of our stuff...they will be done in two weeks....ouch...).
I did in fact seal all of the lights, the vents, the outlets, the windows, the closets, etc but there is still a film of dust on the walls. We are in full wall wipedown mode this morning. All the walls that were exposed we need to wipe down. Also the seals to the two bedrooms were removed by the contractors when they were working so dust sent underneath the doors into the bedrooms and there is dust all over the place in there....not happy about that...... But the floor now looks NICE! Like old oak nicely maintained should look like.

We ripped up all our carpet and had Pergo put down. It looks and feels just like oak, at a fraction of the cost. It also created a lot of dust throughout the entire house. One added benefit is that it seems to have cooled down the house in this BOILING HEAT.

I happen to like my slammin' wood floors.......(just in case you ever think of me as being culture....let alone beautiful....I check in the mirror everyday...no improvements ever.... The popularity of wood or woodlike floors certainly doesn't help the carpeting industry. I like carpeting in the bedrooms, thank you, but wouldn't mind hardwood floors in the living room as well as dining area.
