- hotwine - 03-06-2003 This could go under Best Buys, or Moderators, or whereever... but this seems as good a pigeon hole as any. What are your favorites these days for house wines? These are "go to" standbys that you keep on hand for any occasion. They might be "daily drinkers", and/or steal deals... but they're the ones you try to keep in stock, and get nervous when you get down to the last bottle or two. Here are mine: Reds Cline Syrah (Cal label) Fat Bastard Shiraz Blackstone Merlot (Cal label) Blackstone Cabernet Sauvignon (recent addition) Borsao Granacha (also recent) Barbera d'Alba (pick a label) Bertani Catullo Chianti Classico (pick a label) cheapo Bordeaux (pick a label) Cru Beaujolais (pick a few) Whites: Michel Lynch Sauvignon Blanc Tommasi Pinot Grigio Mosel-Sahr-Ruwer Rieslings (pick a few) Kendall-Jackson SB (Vintner's Reserve) Deerfield Ranch SB Sparklers: Taittinger NV Clicquot Yellow Label (she insists!) (We don't consider Champagnes to be "daily drinkers", but we do keep several on hand for impromptu celebrations) Hmmmm....no Pinot Noirs/Burgs (except Beaujolias), no NZ, no Oz, no Cal sparklers.... no Texas "must haves"... no NY, or VA... Such as it is, that's my gotta-have-on-hands. What's yours? - joeyz6 - 03-06-2003 A CDR-V I posted on a while back, the 2000 Caves de Rasteau. I was lucky enough to come across it right after I got here and have kept a couple of bottles on hand ever since. Widely distributed, good stuff and a great value at 5 euros a bottle. - wondersofwine - 03-06-2003 Whites: a few Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Rieslings Sancerre whites (Sauvignon Blanc) may look into adding Pinot Blanc Reds: Rancho Zabaco Sonomo Heritage Zinfandel Byron (Santa Maria Valley) Pinot Noir Rosemount Hill of Gold Shiraz Sarah's Blend from Marquis-Philips, although I may run out of that before the next vintage comes along. I don't think of it as a "daily" drink but have several bottles on hand. Jed Steele Pinot Noir--I would like to make the 1999 a standby if I can stock up on it. That said: Value Whites: Sancerre -- multiple houses NZ SB -- multiple houses German Spatlese -- multiple houses Whites: Viognier -- love the McCrea wines Alsace Gewurztraminer -- mainly Weinbach Value Reds: No such animals for my palate except maybe Cotes du Rhone. Some WA Merlots are pretty nice but none in my cellar. Reds: CdP by far gets our attention these days -- multiple houses Bordeaux -- multiple houses WA Syrah -- mainly McCrea. He is in a class of his own IMHO. - ShortWiner - 03-07-2003 Haven't really been keeping "house wines" as I've been too into experimenting and tasting the field lately. However, just purchased a mixed case of Borsao Campo de Borja and Thomas Mitchell Red (a great value Aussie--Cab Franc, Shiraz, Cab Sauv, and Ruby Cabernet blend) for this purpose. - wondersofwine - 03-07-2003 IK, do you know the price of the Greenwood Ridge White Riesling? I really liked their late harvest riesling and their zinfandel. The pinot noir did not impress me as much. - zenda2 - 03-07-2003 Here are mine-keep in mind that I've been laid off for a while. These are all recent bargains with a capital B except for the the CdRs and Zin. I stocked up on those in the past, will replace again when the paychecks start rolling in/next really good vintage. House wines for me include: Reds: d'Arenburg Stump Jump Bonny Doon Domaine du Blagueurs Syrah Cline Syrah Benton Lane and Rex Hill Pinots (we always have some on hand, though neither fill the bill for value wines) Vina Alarba Old Vines Grenache A Mano Primitivo Abadia Retuerta Rivola Castano Solanera Old Vines Monstrell We're not big cab drinkers, but we bought a stash of Chateau Grand Mayne 1997 on closeout for $13 so that we have a house cab. Very good stuff. Thanks for the rec. Matt - Innkeeper - 08-08-2003 Had our first Hedges GMS (2000) last night. Picked it up in Maryland during our April trip. After decanting, had my first glass before dinner. It tasted, as many of our novices say, very dry. Think it may have been tannin on the tongue. Once very special burgers came off the mesquite smoked fire, the wine transformed into an excellent food wine. Accompanied by an wonderful salad, it held its own. Lost track of the exact cost, but think it was around $10. Would definitely get more, if found, as a super hamburger wine. |
