As recently assigned managing editor, Ray Isle seems to have gotten his arms around Wine & Spirits with the March edition. Starting with a travelogue of Carmel Valley that he visited a month before we did, can attest that he hit the nail on the head. Even tasted the same wines at Robert Talbott, with the same reactions! Further into the edition his second article on region covers the pinots of the Santa Lucia Highlands with detail and introspection. He unflinchingly quotes locals including colorful Gary Pisoni, he of the oft found Pisone Vineyards. These quotes definitely take W&S out of the family magazine category.

Other articles include reports on New Zealand Pinot by Taylor Antrim, Chilean Cabernet by Joshua Greene, Australian Shiraz by Max Allen, and the one on New World Riesling by Rod Smith reviewed on other post today. All these articles are very well done, and highly informative. Among the other bits of information, was intrigued by a report on Pipa, a new Tapas and Spanish Wine place in New York. Have to look it up on next trip to the Apple.

Nothing pretentious in this magazine, making it IMHO just about the best to be found on the newsstands these days.
