This may only available to those east of the Connecticut River. It is from the Tuckerman Brewery up the road from us in Conway, NH. It is called Headwall Alt, and is described as "A German Style Brown Ale." Can't say I've ever had one of those unless you consider Beck's Dark. But, this one is a winner, and not just because it is local. Actually thought it was from Vermont until I just checked. It is a very lovely brew if you can find it.

No, Beck's Dark (Beck's is considered the Budweiser of Germany) is a mass-produced dark lager in the southern-German style and bears no resemblance to any Altbier, which is a dark ale traditionally from Düsseldorf, Germany, and normally conditioned over a relatively long period of time. I've never seen any beers from that brewery out here in the west, but Altbiers are delicious (if you like them a little more bitter than your average ale). Try comparing it to one of the authentic German producers, like Ürig, Diebels, or Schlosser. Prost!

I've never been primarily a beer drinker but when I lived in Germany I sometimes ordered the Alt Dusseldorfer. (Other times, especially in warm weather, I ordered an Urquell Pilsener [Czech] or Heineken [Dutch] or Tuborg [Danish]. More often, though, I got a glass of Mosel wine or a spritzer.

Another good Alt style beer is Alaskan Amber. Widmer used to make a fantastic alt but really hasn't put anything out since they became Budmer.

In between the raindrops we managed to grill some burgers. They and some baked potatoes, and salad went fine with some more Headwall Alt. Yeah!, Cabernet would have been better, but was too tired to go down and get one!
