As most of you remember my Nephew Matthew was hit in the eye with a paintball Thanksgiving Day. At that point he was blind with his vision recorded at 20/2400.

Now, 6 weeks later with the swelling down his recovery is just short of miraculous.

Here is a message from my Sister:

Matthew had retinal surgery on Monday because they found 3 tears in the retinal layer of his eye. So, it was a proactive proceedure to prevent a retinal detachment. It went well and he didn't even have any anethesia. Pretty rare for a child his age. He was great. They also found a tear in the layer of the eye that regulates fluid in and out. That can't be fixed so he has to be watched yearly for glaucoma. Other than that he will be cleared for all acitivties on Monday!! Yippee! Eye site is up to 20/50 so thanks for your prayers and concern.

A personal thanks from me to all of you as well.

What marvelous news WGC! Hard as we try to protect them our children still have the propensity to find pitfalls in the road. WW

Great News! Thanks for the update.

And tell your sister that glaucoma, if caught early, is quite treatable. I have it, as do all the male members of my immediate family. Just a matter of drops taken daily.

There is laser beam to correct glaucoma, but I am of the opinion that the mildest form of treatment is always the one to choose first. I'll continue with that line until I am forced by circumstance to go under a knife or beam.

I'm thrilled to hear of his visual recovery. He sounds like a brave lad.

I needed to hear some good news today! That's terrific!

Thanks again everyone. I'm sure that so many kind thoughts and prayers that went out to him helped in his recovery.

Hopefully I will never have to return the favor!

Sad to say there was a case publicized in North Carolina a couple weeks ago about several teenagers attacking another youngster (a random victim I believe) with paint balls and may have blinded him in one eye. It's a shame youth have to learn from such harsh circumstances.

That is really sad. I hope that he will recover as my nephew did.

I think these things should be illegal for those under 21. Plain and simple. They are really dangerous.
