One of the major pluses in drining in the west is the tremendous distances you go without seeing people. Gey on interstate 8 and you go from Tuscon to San Diego without a hitch. I put 20 CDs' in the truck and away I went. Two things become very clear...the intimacy and the good sound system make for Great listening. Almost like I never heard Clifford Brown before. Took the Art Blakey " A night at Birdland" that featured Lou Donaldson, alto, Horace Silver, piano,Curley Russel, bass, Blakey on drums and the REMARKABLE Clifford Brown on trumpet. I've probably played this CD 20 times and this is the 1st time I've really heard it. This kid takes a routine melody " Once in a While " and elevates it to almost operatic heights. His death in his early 20s' was tragic. The other CD that kicked my ole hyde was Paquita D'Rivera. This incredible sax man from Cuba has a host of great sidemen help in making this album "The best of Paquita D'Rivera" a real swinging expaerience. Thot something was going wrong in my engine when I noticed I was keeping time tapping my foot on the accellerator whilst the truck be on automatic pilot. WW

Back in my Coast Guard days when I moved across the country three or four times, I used to think of large sections of the West (in Nevada, Utah and New Mexico) as radio Siberia. As in exhiled from civilization.

All you could ever pick up were bible thumpers and s***-kicking music. I used to hit the scan button and see how many times it would go around before stopping. Almost drove off the road one time when I completely forgot the radio was even on and gospel suddenly came blasting out.

Now before everyone gets in a tizzy, I apologize if you happen to like country music or religion in it's evangelical broadcast form.

CDs are a godsend.
