My father-in-law, who was a journalist, wrote for the Stars and Stripes during WWII. He was assigned to Eisenhower's information staff and so he got to be eyewitness to some events like the first concentration camp discovery and the surrender on May 8.

For anyone interested, his Stars and Stripes account of the surrender is on:

He is the fellow on the left of the first pic on the page. He went on to edit for the NY Herald Tribune and then the N Y Law Journal. His son, David (also a journalist first USA Today, now Businessweek) is on his way to Europe to represent his dad, who died a few years ago, in VE celebration events this weekend.

My wife got the stuff onto the Web site

Very impressive. Tell Ann that we are proud of her Dad.

Fascinating. Thanks, Foodster, and thanks to your beloved.

I'll second all. I'm a WWII history buff and love personal stories.

Read it today. Thanks, Foodie.
One of my parents' friends was an AP reporter but I'm not sure if he was reporting for them during World War II or shortly after the war. When he was based out of New York City he bought a home in Connecticut. My uncle, a lawyer on Wall Street, later bought that home in Connecticut when the reporter changed careers and moved back to the Midwest. The reporter's daughter, one of my sister's closest friends, spend a few years working in Manhattan for "Time/Life" magazines, possibly as a researcher or copy editor--I'm not sure of her duties. She too moved back to the Midwest and worked for a time for the University of Nebraska Press. I guess the writing bug hit more than one generation.
