Dan Berger has a two page cover story in his newsletter out today (6/15/06) on the new New York Wine & Culinary Center. No mention of our man Thomas (Foodie), but an excellent article otherwise. Apparently a lot of careful planning went into this operation which has a lot of potential to promote NYS wines.

He doesn't review any of local wines, but has a review on an American AVA Riesling made in California with Anthony Road grapes shipped out there by AR owner John Marini, who some of us met during our Finger Lakes get together. I am going to try to get Dan up there to do some serious wine tasting.

Who makes the Riesling in CA from Anthony Road grapes?

- Innkeeper - 06-15-2006

Scott Harvey, and his brand is Jana, named after his wife. It is priced at $18. He also makes a Nape Valley Riesling in the same (dry) style that is priced at $15. (scottharveywines.com or 707-968-9575).

IK,

I have nothing to do with the culinary center, except that I am hired to teach a wine class there. So Dan Berger had no reason to mention me, unless he was listing the instructors--then, it would be an ommission.

I should also say that the price of not being a promotion hound is that one is often ommitted...knowing the journalism profession, I can tell you that writers don't usually seek information that hasn't already been fed to us...

Scott Harvey has a decent (though checkered) background. He started at Renwood and owned the famous Grandpere vineyard with his wife. After the messy divorce, she now is sole owner. Renwood still makes a Grandpere Zin, but it's not from the Grandpere Vineyard - it's from a vineyard planted from cuttings off Grandpere. Deceptive marketing, IMNSHO. Scott then went to Folie a Deux with Dick Peterson (Heidi Barrett's dad), and now that's gone. Jana is not the wife that owns Grandpere, BTW. All that said, he makes some really nice juice.
