Yesterday was my wife Eileen's 40th. birthday so after returning home from a wonderful dinner at Josefs Restaurant in Falston, Maryland, she asked for more wine so I popped the Copa Santa....what a mistake.
This wine is so big, a bruiser, and so disjointed that I recorked and opened the St. Francis Zin (you know the rest of that story but my wife loved it!). Tonight I revisited the Copa Santa. What a wine! Saturated black/purple color. Somewhat muted nose of black fruit and earthy notes. Very concentrated showing creme de cassis, bacon, chocolate, mocha, mature plum and attractive bitter(mineral like)flavors. Very delicious after 24 hours of breathing. Needs a lot more bottle time. A huge wine. Received as a gift 2 years ago. 13%Alc/vol. (Gotta find more)

Sounds like our kind of wine! Happy 40th Eileen. You're only a quarter century behind us!

Clavel is one of my favorites as well, Drew. I don't have enough depth of cellaring for this wine to tell you when it is prime to drink, but the wines are certainly very ageable.

Congrats to your child bride, Drew. Sounds like there's about the same age difference in your household as we have in ours: Debra will turn 50 later this year, sometime after I roar past 61. We also sometimes encounter the situation you described, in which she loves a wine that I'm ready to deep-six. I haven't figured out how to predict that yet...

Pretty much the same, Gil. I've got 51 ready to pounce in May...ain't cradle stealn' fun? Eileen seems to enjoy 99% of reds that I pour and no SW except sparkling wines. She won't analyze the wines, though, trying to pick out the different flavor and sensory components. If she says..."Umm, fruity", I know that she likes the wine regardless of whether it's fruit forward in style.

Give your CB my belated best. As you have probably read by now, Buckster sabatoged my puter. WW

Unfortunately, I failed to do the job completely -- kinda like George Sr., eh?
