what would make a good pairing with chestnut soup? rather basic, just chesnuts, stock and onion/celery pureed.

You are looking for something to balance the creamy, earthy, smooth decadent nature of the chesnut along with the freshness of the celery/onion ... so totally off the wall..

Hows about a well aged Rhone? or a completely different direction, and aged Rioja white...like over a decade old.....

Manzanilla Sherry

Foodie's option is better than mine. I've still a lot to learn here.

Since the chestnuts will lend a smoky and sweet note to the soup, I would recommend a slightly off-dry German Riesling (such as Dr. Loosenfs basic Riesling). The sweetness in both the soup and the wine will balance well, while enhancing the smokiness of the chestnuts.
