cuvee des caudalies
disgorged 03.12.2002

$35ish

My girlfriend calls me on my way home from work and tells me the dinner she's made:

whole grain rice and bulgur pilaf
sauteed asparagus and morels
braised ramps
crusty bread in the oven

her: darling, what wine do we have that could match with all of this?

darling: let's break out that grand cru champagne we haven't tried!

dinner was great, so was champagne...

right down the middle gold color. not straw. no copper. just gold.

smells like bread, tangerines, and a touch of cinnamon? clove? something like that.

really bright and showy on the entry. intense bubbles and happy citric acidity.
the mid-palate mellows into somethng slightly yeasty and creamy, but just for an instant... then the finish is very very citrusy. lemons, orange and tangerine. all there. but no grapefruit or lime-- i checked...
long finish considering the acidity. pretty full body considering there's no p.n. in it.

i'm usually a fan of strongly pinot champs (egly, baby) but this is really good...

Sounds very good indeed.
