After trying four somewhat disappointing Spanish wines, I came upon this great mix of Grenache/Carinena. It's a full-bodied red, mineral and herbaceous on the nose, fruity but not overpoweringly so, with soft tannins on the finish. I thought it was very balanced and very quaffable! Goes for about $11 per bottle here.
For those of you familiar with Spanish wines, do you have any suggestions on what to try next (considering I love this Priorat)?

I have had so many good Spanish wines at good prices lately that I'm surprised you found four bad ones. Agree on the Onix. Off the top of my head, without my notebook in front of me, I'd recommend Protocolo (both the red and rose), Etim grenache, any of the Borsao's, especially the Tres Picos... Sorry, drawing blanks onsome of the others. There are so many good values,just keep trying the under $10-$15 dollar ones (especially grenache based) and I'm sure you'll find some other keepers.

Thanks Woodman; I wrote down your suggestions and will see if I can get them here. I didnt mean to say the four previous Spanish wines were bad -- they were ok for the value but i wouldn't buy them again, especially with hundreds of bottles to chose from [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]
The Onix on the other hand I'd grab another bottle of.

I got the wine at Discount Liquor on Oklahoma and 50th (well it's on Oklahoma and close to 50th street). They have a few cases of it and it's stacked in the middle of one of the aisles.

Tried this last night--must have been a bad bottle because it was sour, sour, sour. Blech. Disappointing.

Must have been a bad bottle. That wine is an absolute crowd-pleaser. There's another little goodie from Priorat that I've fallen hard for, the Mas Igneus Barranc dels Closos, Garnacha and Carignane, medium bodied, sweet spices, black cherries, lavender, graphite, and clay. Priced about the same as the Onix, around $9.
We've had a Spanihs special running for the past 30 days or so and some other lovelies came to light:
Capcanes' Mas Donis Tarragona is the best I've ever tasted from that wine. Gorgeous, dark, and jazzy.
Finca Antigua Tempranillo, from Jesus Martinez-Bujanda, is killer Temp at a ridiculous price, about $6. Ditto for the Marques de Grinon Durius Tempranillo at about $6. Both warm, spicy, nicely structured and READY.
Joan D'Anguera Planeta at about $11 is a big, black, Syrah-laced beauty that breathes like an Olympic swimmer and shows flavors upon flavors (I swtopped counting at about 15) It's got EXCELLENT balance and a surprising delicacy. A freakin' stately wine.

Another bad bottle! Top of the cork was stained and actually wet before pulling. And this bottle was from a different store than the first! I won't try a third time.
