1999 Concha y Toro Puente Alto Marques de Casa Cabernet Sauvignon ($12.99) Deep purple. Decanted for 1 hour. Then gave up a reluctant nose of smoke, plums, earth. Taste of same, plus other dark fruits. Medium drying tannins. 20-second + finish. 30 minutes later, chocolate added to the mix. Another 30 minutes, oak joined the party. After a night with the Vacu-Vin, tar showed in the nose and on the palate. A good, structured wine that I think will open up over the next couple years, and is a good value. But I think WS was overly enthusiastic with its score of 90 and Spectator Selection designation. That’s exactly what they gave the 99 Pine Ridge Rutherford cab the week before (which was a low score for that wine IMO). I don't find this Chilean effort to even be in the same league as that California gem. 87+/89

I opened up this wine last night, having bought it solely on WS' 90 point score, also including it in the top 100 of '02.

Terrible. While I respect the differences of tastes people have, I can't remember disagreeing with a review so viscerally before, I couldn't get through more than one glass. My friend who was sharing the bottle with me felt the same way. Funky head, barely noticeable dark fruit buried under layers of dirt ("earth" if you must, but I've had good earthy wines, and this ain't it) and gravel.

This was actually my first Chilean wine, and its a shame it turned out so bad. Are these flavors indicative of Chilean Cab in general? Or is this just one bad WS review?

I have to agree. While I do think this opened up and became nt too bad after a few hours, I have probably had 100 wines better than this myself in the last year. For the 12.99 I paid it was tolerable, but hardly a top 100 pick.

I agree, and I am quite displeased with the general direction of Chilean wines--the reds toward dirt; the whites towards hot; and both colors towards wood.

I have the opposite feeling toward Argentina. I think their wines are getting better and better. I have many good Malbecs in all price ranges over the past couple of years.

...generally agree there too.
