Have reservations at a Cuban BYO restaurant. They serve dishes such as roast pork Cuban style(?), pork mole, roast suckling pig, tostones rellenos, etc. Need help!!! Would a Rhone work?

There are a number of threads that discuss matching wine with traditional Mexican dishes.

The bottom line, I think, was to stick with Mexican beer or with Tequila.

Use the search function and enter "Mexican" or "Mexico".

I know, I know. You said Cuban. However the dishes you mentioned are also traditional Mexican.

Hi WineP. I've had the pleasure of enjoying Cuban Food many times in Tampa and MrD, It's about as close to Mexican food as those two continental neighbors Germany and Frances' food are alike. Mexican food uses LOTS of peppers and spices whearas Cuban food is bland in comparison. IMHO you can take either a nice Zinfandel or the Rhones you mentioned or any # of Syrahs or Shiraz. They roast most of their meats so any of the above are fine. The bread is really good, kinda like a combo of Pita and flatbread. Have fun and enjoy. WW

WW you have a point, but I was referring to traditional Mexican more so than the current rave - Tex/Mex.

Traditional Mexican is considerably more bland than Tex/Mex and it can handle a good Rioja, Zinfandel, Shiraz, Syrah, or Rhone.

However, I still feel that beer is a better match. Just my humble opinion.

Hmm, or for a white maybe, say, Gewertz? Hey WW?

- winoweenie - 02-25-2001

One eensey-weensy transgression and a slipped lip and there's no end to the shame! WW

You're now branded for life, WW! "This man said he actually likes Gewurz! A SW!" It's now stamped on your forehead!

- cpurvis - 02-25-2001

Perhaps we just refer to the varietal as "geWWurz" from now on

- winoweenie - 02-25-2001

Cheap shot there CP. When I was in little league baseball I hit one home-run and no-boddie ebber called me a home-run hitter. WW

But WW, you work so HARD to earn the occasional cheap shot Besides, it's not that much of a cheap shot...gewurz means "spicy" & you do add spice to the Board!

BTW, if you hit one over in Little League, then you did better than I.

And, my! how we've strayed from the topic again...

Agin', once the topic be answered in toto then we have a tendency to stray. I think it's CCKs' fault. WW

I called Willie--he said Shiriesling goes with Cuban food.

Incidentally, I am in the Shiraz-Syrah camp on Cuban food;GeWWurztraminer has the power too (anyone who can hit a home run must know something about power).

- mrdutton - 02-27-2001

Hmmmm...... I thought one of the choices I mentioned was Shiraz..... maybe I was wrong.

- Drew - 02-28-2001

Did someone say Shiraz and when do we eat?
WW,I've read the posts and I see no evidence of any admission of fondness for SW's...hang in there and don't fold to harrassment.
